Family Tree...Joseph Rossi and Shaun Malley wanted to make movies, but found it hard to get a foot in the door. That’s why in January 2005 they created their own production company called This Space for Rent. "We just decided to start our own company because it’s what we want to do. We want to write our own stuff and direct our own stuff," said Rossi, 26 and an Ahuntsic native. "What better way, since no one was going to give us the chance, so we just created our own company to do so." Last year, the two filmmakers released Gelsomina, a short film that aired on CH Montreal. In May was the premiere of their first feature-length film, Family Tree, at the Leonardo Da Vinci Centre in St. Leonard. It was the minor success of Gelsomina that pushed the two to write and direct their first feature-length film. "We thought, ‘let’s do a feature, what have we got to lose?’ We have about six grand, we have a camera, we got competent actors from an acting school and we did it in 15 days," said Rossi. "We pooled our money together from what we’ve made together in the past year from our part-time jobs and we decided to film a story about a family, about three siblings who are not happy. They’ve all peaked in life too early. "I’m too tired at this moment to be nervous about the premiere... No, I’m not really worried but then again my feelings will probably change ," said Malley.
